Between Haarlem and the North Sea lies Zuid-Kennemerland – a 3,800 hectare nature reserve consisting of beach, calcareous dunes, inland dune woodlands and wet dune valleys… and a great place for a Saturday morning bike ride (source your picnic-ables en route at the Saturday morning market on Haarlem’s Grote Markt!)
I developed a soft spot for these shaggy, ginger-haired highlanders during a visit to Scotland several years ago – a handsome herd in the fields surrounding Cardhu’s Speyside distillery, mellow and affable after lunching on the spent grains from the whisky distilling process (the draff), won my heart!
They’ve apparently been introduced to these low Lowlands to graze on the lush Dutch grasses, “keeping the land open”… and no doubt ponder the lack of topographical elevation (in such stark contrast to their land of origin) while chewing the cud.
